The 3rd iteration of Stuttgart's trial blazing SUV has arrived and it is a proper Porsche through and through! The new Cayenne is completely redesigned from the ground up. A new chassis, new power plants, and some key 911-derived tech undergird the third-gen Cayenne, making it the most complete vision yet of the factory-fresh Porsche SUV.
The lighter, tighter chassis makes itself known immediately. Coupled with Porsche’s typically-great steering feel, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne carries itself with a fantastic agility driving like the Porsche it is.
Porsche bolts its 440-hp twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 into the Cayenne S, which drops zero-to-60-mph times to 4.9 seconds (4.6 with launch control). The extra power and the 405 lb-ft of torque are immediately noticeable. Passing power is superb, and the S has an announced eagerness. The twin-turbo V-6 also has a louder and grittier growl from 3000 rpm to redline than does the base 3.0-liter. Aside from the sound of the V-6 working, there’s little else that disturbs the cabin, as road and wind noise are kept to luxury-car levels.
Of course, it's far nicer on the inside than any off-road toy has a right to be. Like the outside, the cabin features subtle-yet-welcome changes that reflects the essential Porsche DNA. The rising center console, center-tach instrument panel, and flat dash have all evolved. New is the backlit haptic-touch design flanking the gearshift while the instrument panel sees the traditional four flanking gauges on either side of the iconic tach replaced with high resolution, configurable LCD screens. The familiar dash now holds a 12.3-inch Porsche Communication Management infotainment system that's smooth, clear, and easy to use. The home screen is incredibly customizable with different-sized widgets to take full advantage of the generous digital real estate.
Porsche hasn’t radically departed from the original Cayenne. There are still loads of power, amazing handling for an SUV, and a luxury-car interior. Building a sporty and pricey utility vehicle is no longer a risk, and as a result the Cayenne now has a lot of imitators….but no equals.
